"On September 26, 2003, Relic Entertainment released the source code to Homeworld, a 3D real-time strategy game set in space. Homeworld, originally released in 1999, was dubbed 'Game of the Year' by PC Gamer and 'Strategy Game of the Year' by Computer Gaming World.

This a Linux port of the Homeworld code released by Relic. It is still in a very early state, and many of the features (and stability) of the Windows version are not yet implemented."

Final Fantasy XII Q&A

PlayStation 2: Final Fantasy XII Q&A:
"Final Fantasy XII Q&A
Thirty questions on next year's biggest game.
..

November 20, 2003 - A day after a press briefing which brought to the world the first true flood of details on Final Fantasy XII, Square Enix made the unprecedented and bold move of giving access to the game's development core to a bunch of shabbily dressed and notably smelly members of the foreign press. The following is a transcript of a Q&A session with FFXII character designer Akihiko Yoshida, art director Hideo Minaba and background director Isamu Kamikokuryou. Not present (but referred to numerous times, so remember his name) was the game's producer and director Yasumi Matsuno.

Q: Can you tell us how the Final Fantasy XII camera system works?

Minaba: The camera system is fully 360 degrees and closer to FFXI in that you can see from the first person and third person. We aren't just working on backgrounds, but we're also creating things like the ceiling. You'll be able to view the ceiling as well.

[ NOTE: we think by saying 'first person,' Minaba is referring to being able to look around at the world rather than moving around in first person. This would be in line with comments from yesterday. Whatever the case, having an FFXI-like behind-the-character perspective is a change for the series.]

Q: Can you comment on some of the equipment from the game and your possible role in designing it?

Minaba: I was not in charge of the design of any of the equipment - swords and shields, etc. That intertwines with the battle system so I can't say much, but there will be a lot of equipment."

PlayStation 2 coming to China - News at GameSpot

PlayStation 2 coming to China - News at GameSpot: "PlayStation 2 coming to China

Sony to officially launch console in four cities, release Chinese editions of games.

The Interfax news agency is reporting that Sony is planning to officially launch the PlayStation 2 in China. Beginning in December, the console will be sold in 10 official stores in four cities: Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Shenzhen. CellStar, one of China's biggest mobile-phone companies, will be in charge of distributing the PS2, which will sell for around 1,400 to 1,500 yuan ($169 to $181), and will come bundled with three as-yet-unnamed games. An American company, Grey Global Group, will handle advertising and PR for the PS2.

On its end, Sony said it will release Chinese versions of several Japanese games. However, when asked by Interfax, a Sony spokesman wouldn't elaborate further on the company's plans for the potentially massive Chinese PS2 market.

Ætli Kína geti orðið einhver eðlilegur markaður fyrir nútímaleikjatölvur eins og PS2? Fyrir ekki svo löngu síðan tilkynnti Nintendo að þeir ætluðu að gefa út tölvu í Kína ámóta gömlu Súper Nintendo vélinni, nema þessi átti að koma í veg fyrir sjóræningjastarfsemi með því að skammta hverjum sem kaupir vélina nokkrum hylkjum sem viðkomandi verður síðan að fara með í búðina til að áfylla það nýjum leikjum. En tölva eins og PS2... Við verðum bara að sjá.
Þetta virðist þó bara vera tilraun, miðað við hve fáir leikir og lítið er látið fara fyrir þessari útgáfu.

Mizuguchi headlines TIGRAF fest in Tokyo - Dreamcast News at GameSpot

Mizuguchi headlines TIGRAF fest in Tokyo - Dreamcast News at GameSpot:
"Mizuguchi headlines TIGRAF fest in Tokyo

Game creation gospel according to Space Channel 5, Rez creator Tetsuya Mizuguchi.

TOKYO--At this year's TIGRAF conference (Tokyo International Computer Graphics Festival), held last Thursday in Japan, a group of top Japanese game developers came together to talk about the game creation process. The biggest name was former Sega designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi, who not only made an elaborate presentation, but also participated in a panel discussion afterwards. Mizuguchi was also the only guest speaker at the show who did not represent a single company--he had left Sega just last month and was now independent.

During his hour-long presentation, Mizuguchi looked back on his work done at Sega, emphasizing that high-quality graphics aren't the only important elements of games. Mizuguchi started off by talking about his first project at Sega, the production of a CG movie used in an amusement park ride called Megalipolis Tokyo City Battle, in 1992. The movie worked with the most highly-sophisticated graphics of the time and was developed on three Silicon Graphics workstations at a cost of around 40 million yen."

Skapari Space Channel 5 og Rez lætur á sér kræla. Með stór markmið, þó án stórfyritækis sé.

Tetsuya Mizuguchi to exit Sega - Rez News for PlayStation 2 at GameSpot

Tetsuya Mizuguchi to exit Sega - Rez News for PlayStation 2 at GameSpot:

"Tetsuya Mizuguchi to exit Sega

Space Channel 5 designer announces he will dissolve long-standing relationship with publisher.

Sega's development department suffered a major blow today when legendary designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi announced he will be leaving the company. Mizuguchi has been working under the Sega banner for more than 10 years and is known for being the producer on a number of best-selling titles such as Sega Rally, Rez, and Space Channel 5.

After retiring on October 10, Mizuguchi will continue to do freelance work in the gaming industry under an as-yet-unnamed independent company that he will be establishing.

Amongst Mizuguchi's comments come directly from yesterday's show:

"When I look at the current game industry and think about my future as an artist, in terms of growing and being challenged, this is the right time for me to break out from [the corporate structure] and become a freelance producer and creator in different media." "

Here are some new images of Square Enix's PlayStation 2 action RPG Fullmetal Alchemist, scheduled to release in Japan on December 25, for 6800 yen. There are two types of attacks in the game, one is normal attack, the other is alchemy attack. The main character has a mechanic right arm, which can turn into a blade. You can increase the power of your attack by casting weapon alchemy to your blade. There are 50 different kinds of alchemy at your disposal, such as creating a pillar to move around different place; an iron ball with chain to attack enemies in a distance; a cannon to deal with enemy with hard shell; and a hammer to knock the enemy head to make him confuse."

Nokkuð áhugaverður leikur sem Square Enix er að vinna í um þessar mundir. Við verðum þó að sjá til hvort hann fer eitthvað út fyrir Japan.
